The Woodland Garden: Shade Will Never be the Same Again

A magical waterfall surrounded by shade-loving plants

Some of the most beautiful plants in the world grow in the shade--and many of us are blessed (or cursed depending on what you'd like to grow) with an abundance of dim, murky, tree-covered spots.

Celebrate your shadiness! Think of it as an asset. It allows you to use a fabulous palette of plants that would burn to a crisp in full sun.

Flowers are just the start of what's possible. Many woodland flowers bloom early to take advantage of the sunlight that reaches the woodland floor before the trees leaf out. Fantastic foliage enlivens shady areas long after the flowers of spring are gone.
