Pony Up! 12.31.06

The much maligned advance of agriculture is a mixed bag as evidenced by what's happening in the heathlands of Anglesey in Wales, UK. The Garden (the official publication of The Royal Horticultural Society, www.rhs.org.uk ) reports that the declining populations of Gentiana pneumonanthe, the rare Marsh Gentian, are being aided by the grazing of Shetland ponies.

The mastications of these ungulates helps keep the populations of woody invaders down, enabling the gentian to thrive...and survive.
